Gil Reminisces about his involvement and
the formation of the NZ branch of ICFR
"There had always been a number of 292/992
Rotarians who took their caravans to Conference and Frank Forster had several times
tried to get them interested in forming ICFR but without success. 1978 was to
be his final "try"
and this time it "clicked". He was headmaster
of a school at Fairfield, Hamilton.
"I was President of Taradale at the time of
the 1978 Conference held in March that year. Taradale was originally in
District 294 when it was chartered in 1959. It subsequently became 994 and
then was excised from the Wellington District and together with part of 992
(Auckland) became the new District 993 - subsequently 9930 as it is today. And
the combined conference was a get-together of 992 and 993.
"994 didn't seem to be interested and that
continues through to this day when they decided not to participate in next years
combined conference, once again in Rotorua!
"Arthur (Stafford) pestered me every Thursday
night for weeks to join ICFR and in the finish I decided it was easier to give him
the $3 instead of keeping on saying "No". And so we joined in September of the
"Founding Year".
