Collecting for National Appeals

From the outset the Club in looking for ways to offer support to the community, offered support to local branch efforts to raise money for a number of high profile international relief agencies. So it was not surprising that one of its first initiatives in 1960 was for its members to turn out as collectors for a CORSO appeal in which it is reported that £206 was collected.

  • In 1961 it assisted St John's Ambulance with a radio appeal but already there was insurrection within the ranks with a letter from a group of members objecting to being called to help with house to house appeals for other organisations. The letter stated that "the practices have the common factor of money raising as their repugnant feature and we are of the opinion that too much pre-occupation into such material considerations not only lowers the tone of our impact on the community but may well become the source of suspicion and contempt in this community."  Despite this, the practice continued as can bee seen because a CORSO appeal were supported in 1964 and by 1975 the Club switched its allegiance to the  Save the Children organisation  and assisted with collection which raised $1175.

  • Support for the Save the Children continued right into the early 90's. This is partly explained by the fact the Club had a long association with this organisation in its Sponsor a Child programme, and through this avenue supported a number of children in Fiji through their formative years paying their school fees.

  • And over the years members of the Club have willingly turned out to help fundraisers such as Crippled Children (1978), radio appeals (Denise Gordon, 1991 and the Town Hall 1978) as well as the on going SCF.

  • Since the start of the new Millennium the Club no longer supports organisations wanting collectors. This in itself is a sign of changing social structures and reflects the fact the Club has sort the promotion of larger scale fund raisers to help local organisations.

Concert Fundraising

With the growth of the very popular Jazz in the Park Concert at the  Church Road winery, members have given their time selling Glo Sticks. Others have made collection on behalf of Cranford Hospice. The most interesting fund  raiser was a Champagne Breakfast held in the Napier Shopping Centre after the Kiri Te Kanawa concert at the Mission. While socially successful, the event failed to raise as much money as hoped.

Selling Glo Sticks has been a very lucrative form of fundraising for the Club's Project Fund.
